Customer Review : Really BIG and AWESOME Cutting Board : Catskill Craftsmen Super Slab with Finger Grooves I know the dimensions are listed, but I was still taken aback when I saw the size of this thing in person. It has quite the presence in our kitchen. My husband thinks it's too large, but I love being able to chop everything for our meal without having to move anything off the board. I wanted a chopping "station" and this is definitely it. It has such a solid feel under the knife as I chop. I received this block as a gift after putting it on my Amazon wishlist. I think it's quite a good value for what you get. I looked high and low for a large end grain chopping block and if you can find them at all, they usually cost hundreds. It's also important to me to buy American made products when possible. My only complaint is that this item is described as "domestic hardwood", which is rather vague. I wish it were all maple, but I don't think it is. I believe the correct way to care for this board is to keep it well oiled at all times, thoroughly scrape the board when you're done using it (with a bench scraper) and only use a damp sponge or washcloth and perhaps a light mist of vinegar or lemon juice to remove stains and odors. Don't try to "wash" it. It's too heavy for that anyway. More people need to realize that wood has natural antibacterial properties. I haven't had the board long, so I will update my review if any defects appear.

Not Durable : Catskill Craftsmen Wood End Grain Cutting Slab

This board is jewelry for cutting and chopping fanatics. When it arrived I could scarcely believe the sheer mass and quality of the product. In addition to being the cutting board of my dreams, it's a work of craft art. In short, it's beautiful! I use a vegetable cleaver for most of my cutting and the solid "thunk" of the knife on this board as opposed to the annoying rattle of the plastic ones is an earthy joy. In addition, no matter how active your cutting gets, 27lbs. of wood is staying right where it started. Now for the criticism. When I got the board I bought some mineral oil and spent several days mopping the board with it until I decided it could take no more. I then used it for a couple of weeks and loved every minute of it. Then, even though there was no evidence of dirt accumulation, I washed the board in the sink with detergent and hot water (a two minute process)just to satisfy my germ hatred, dried it with a towel and put it on edge to dry overnight. To my horror, the next morning it had a crack! Not fatal, mind you, but as I said earlier, this board is jewelry and if it can't stand washing the manufacturer should tell you! Such are the joys and pitfalls of the best cutting board I've ever seen. Mine (too late) will never see detergent and hot water again. Be forewarned!

Addendum: It's been more than ten years since I bought this board. After my initial error, I never washed it again. (The crack "healed" by the way). I bought what's known as a cabinet scraper from Lee Valley tools and I use that to clean the board between uses. It leaves the board with an unbelievably smooth finish. Whenever I get in the mood I might clean the board with a bit of vinegar or alternately hydrogen peroxide since according to Consumer Reports the germs that can tolerate one cannot stand the other. I just pour one of them on, scrub with a plastic abrasive pad, and then immediately dry the board with paper towels, though I have a sneaking suspicion that none of that is necessary. If after a while the board starts looking a bit gray or dry, I just smear it with a bit of drugstore mineral oil and leave it alone overnight. Next day it's beautiful again.

If you have an appreciation for knives and take pleasure in preparing food for yourself and your family you absolutely must have a heavy, end-grain board like this one. I can't imagine being without it.

I am very disappointed. My cutting board is evidently not glued properly. After only three weeks of use (and no soaking in soap and water), it's pulling apart. Shipping it back might be a microscopic high-priced (heavy, as you know). Will look into the one year warranty. Mkleiss

Anyone seeing for an endgrain cutting board is likely to be a serious cook seeing for a potential product.
Be forewarned on this one - Penny wise, Pound foolish

Like other reviewers I was thrilled to find an endgrain cutting board at half the price of other offerings.
And like other reviewers I was impressed with my purchase out of the box.
But now 3 years later the board is falling apart.

Within several months it developed cracks along the edges where the glue was failing.
Yes, I had been retention the board properly oiled and protected from water.
In a call to the maker I received (virtual) shrugged shoulders and a hint that "perhaps you can fill the cracks with soft bees wax."

So I have been following that suggestions and meticulously attending to oiling and drying down the board after every use.
Sorry - the glue joints are now cracked Everywhere, straight through out the board.
I am convince this was not an issue of poor handling but of poor construction.... Otherwise I should see cracks in the wood itself, not just the seams
It is headed for the trash.
